The right chain length can make a necklace look effortless. The wrong one makes it look like it's choking you or hanging off you. Here's how each length sits on an average guy and how to figure out which one is right for you.
Men's necklace length chart
| Length | Where it sits | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| 18" | Base of the neck, around the collarbone | Slim builds, clean minimal look, the shortest layer in a stack |
| 20" | Just below the collarbone | The most popular everyday length; works for most guys |
| 22" | A couple inches below the collarbone | Wearing over a tee collar, bigger builds, a second layer |
| 24" | Upper to mid chest | Pendants, open button-ups, layering under a shorter chain |
| 30" | Mid to lower chest | Over hoodies and sweaters, long statement pieces |
These are based on an average neck. On a bigger neck or broader build, every length will sit a little higher, so size up about 2 inches.
The quick rule: start at 20 to 22 inches
If you're buying your first chain and don't want to overthink it, go with 20" or 22". It sits just below the collarbone, shows over a crew neck tee, and looks natural on most body types.
Chains vs pendants
- Plain chains like the Boxed Silver Cuban or Kelvin Chain look best shorter, around 18" to 22", where the links sit close to the collar.
- Pendants like the Roman Coin Necklace or Signature Cross Necklace need room to hang, so 22" to 24" usually looks best.
Match the length to your build
- Thicker neck or broad chest: go longer. A short chain can look tight.
- Slim build: shorter chains in the 18" to 20" range look proportional. Very long chains can swallow your frame.
- Thick chain: chunky links like a Cuban look best shorter. A heavy chain that's too long can look sloppy.
How to find your length at home
- Grab a piece of string or a phone charger cable.
- Drape it around your neck and let it fall where you want the chain to sit.
- Mark the spot, lay it flat, and measure it in inches.
That number is your ideal length. If you're between two sizes, go with the longer one, since a chain that's a bit long looks better than one that's too tight.
Layering? Space them out
If you're wearing more than one chain, step each one about 2 inches longer than the last, like 20" and 22". Read our full guide to layering necklaces for stack ideas.
